Aromatic Shell Rating:

Hostgator was launched in october 22, 2002 in a Florida dorm room (at Atlantic University) by Brent Oxley. And as since grown into a leader in the industry.

Having undergone tremendous growth both in office acquired and customer growth, Brent Oxley announced the acquirement of Hostgator by Endurance International Group.

Since then Hostgator has broaden their customer support and add new service.

Hostgator is the go to web hosting provider, with over 9 million domains making up 1% of the world's internet traffic.

And with data centers in Houston, Austin, Nishik and Maharashtra in India, Hostgator has the facilities to host and maintain your website.

Endurance International Group also owns BlueHost, JustHost, Ipage, Fatcow among others.

It is very important to choose web hosting provider that guarantee uptime, speed and customer support not just in their advertisement but in their real service too.

HostGator Review - The services

Hostgator offers hosting services from Shared hosting through Cloud hosting, WordPress hosting, and VPS hosting to Dedicated hosting. They also offer domain name along with their hosting services.

While Hostgator offers great hosting plans with competitive pricing, the performance of their server is very vital. Here is the real facts about Hostgator services.

UpTime

A website with great design is only useful if its available 24/7 all year long.

Fortunately, Hostgator up times hits 99.99% (.20% better than the industry) real time. You can be sure of experiencing great up times with Hostgator.

Though Hostgator is still a work in progress but they have been improving considerably over the last few years.

Security

Hostgator provides a free SSL Certificate, automatic malware removal and automated daily database backups to help keep your website stable and secured.

If you've been online for sometime, you know that website security is very important. Although I cannot get the details on how secure their data centers are from physical disaster, I believe they will attend to the servers with highest care.

Hostgaor is also protected against DDoS attacks.

Friendly Platform

Hostgator is very user-friendly for newbies and they provide endless tutorials, FAQ and documents to help you at every single moment.

Their tutorials are also very detailed explanations and simple step-by-step walkthrough.

You want to avoid sterile platform even if you're not a beginner.

Traffic Handling

One of the main issue with Shared Hosting in the capability to handle lots of traffic.

When you start getting frequent visit from huge traffic to your website, you start experiencing downtime and slow page load times.

Unfortunately, Hostgator falls into his category. Although you can upgrade from one plan to another, their traffic handling is just average when your business traffic grows into a huge database.

Speed

Just like Up times, this is equally important for your business.

While Hostgator up times seems pretty good from the outside (albeit without much traffic), the speed they offer is just below avarage.

This is far worst considering search engines factor in website load times (which is very crucial) in their ranking algorithm. And this has been proven to hurt sales and list building.

Shared Hosting

HostGator offers three shared hosting plan:

  • Hatchling Plan: This plan starts at $3.95 per month. It supports only 1 domain name, unlimited disk space and storage and unlimited sub domains.
  • Baby Plan: This plan starts at $5.95 per month. It support unlimited domain names, storage and unlimited bandwidth
  • Business Plan: This plan starts at $5.95 per month. It support unlimited domain names, unlimited bandwidth and storage. It also comes with a free dedicated IP, toll-free number and SSL

Other features of the Shared Hosting Plan includes:

  • Payment Method: Credit Card, PayPal.
  • Easy Signup process
  • Account Activation: Within 24 - 48 hours
  • One-click Installation of Apps and CMS
  • Hidden clause: You cannot use more than 25% of their system resources for longer than 90 seconds at a time.
  • Free Hostgator website
  • Free Website transfer, Domain transfer, MySQL transfer and Script transfer.
  • $100 Google Adwords offer: You can not use it on existing Google Adword account

While their plan seems great, it is important to note that Hostgator uses pricing tricks to pull you closer.

Their Hatchling Plan claims to offer price at $3.95 per month but this is only available on the long term. You have to choose 36 month validity period to qualify for this promotional price. Any period less than that then the price jump up at over 50% of the promotional price.

This is definitely the worst thing in the industry, though it seems common.

The other tricks they pulled is to offer the promotional price for your initial terms only. That means after your 36 month period, price jump up to their original price.
